Happy 2013 y’all! Hope you’ve all had a great start to the year. A blizzard is a perfect time to make an update because 37’ Productions has been very busy this past year.

Had a part in the on the Matchbox Twenty performance at the iTunes concert released late fall 2012. Did some vocal mixing for the incomparable Jimbo Barton. Jimbo and I have been working together for over 10 years now and he has had a large part in making the engineer that I am today. So it’s always an honor, when we get a chance to work together, to answer the call.

Mixing the Wednesdays debut “Red Letter Day” this is a great group of people with a wonderful collection of songs and beautiful harmonies; it was a joy to mix this. The CD release party is planned for February 23rd. You can get tickets here.

Old Jack was in to record their holiday single as well as a cover of Mariah Carey’s “All I want for Christmas is You”. This is a group I have wanted to work with for a long time. I had a lot of fun working on this project!

Just finished recording and mixing Sarah Blacker’s soon to be released EP “Precious Little Things”. This was her first recording with a full 5-piece band which includes new addition Erik White of the Brothers McCann. We took some new and daring approaches to recording this and the result is a beautiful and spacious recording that is a true step forward for Sarah both as a performer and a writer. I can’t wait for all of you to hear this! She has a pledge music donation site out which you can check out here.

Just finished mixing Vary Lumar’s new EP “Capture”, their first release after a 15 month hiatus. This project continues the band’s evolution into the electronic realm. Most of the music was done in a program called Ableton Live and brought to 37’ Productions to add guitars, vocals and horns to what was already a bumpin’ group of tracks. While this is more electronic based, the melodic songwriting continues to evolve and amaze. Keep an eye out for this very soon!

Also just finished a second single for Velah entitled “Knotted”. I love working with this band! They write great songs and are a great group of people, I look forward to doing more with them as they are one of my favorite bands in Boston.

Munk Duane has started recording his new EP. Over the years Munk has done a stellar job of producing, recording, and performing his music all on his own. This EP is a departure for him as it is the first time in a long time he has enlisted the help of a producer and session musicians. We all think the results speak for themselves, look for a Spring 2013 release.

Eric Calderone Group was in recording their debut CD as a live jazz quintet. This is the first time a jazz quintet has recorded live in the studio at 37’ Productions and we were all very excited with the results. It’s honestly very easy to make records like this when you have such outstanding musicians to record!

About to start mixing Victoria Smith’s debut album, which features Tony Savarino, Mike Levesque, Rusty Scott, and yours truly. Vicki is a great up-and-coming songwriter with a wide array of influences. I’m looking forward to this release and being a part of her growth as an artist.

Starting vocals for a new band called Singlecast; this is a collection of musicians from the bands Bone Dry System and Seventh Room. We’re all really excited about how this is sounding so far and can’t wait to get this music out there!

Eliot Bayless is holed up this blizzard weekend starting the new Composted release. Eliot and the band haven’t gone stir crazy yet, and anticipate melting some faces with this one.

Brad McCarthy has been in recently working on new material with the Barricades and the Wild Northern, as well as new songs from Rob Pagnano. Brad never fails to deliver great sounding music, and from what I’ve heard of each of these he’s only getting better.

Throughout the rest of the winter, we’ll be continuing to work with Totem, Fil Pacino, Kristen Merlin, Rachel Rynick, and Paul Sullivan. Until next time!

Hello all! As I sit here, reviewing the past year in my head, I’m humbled and overwhelmed. We’ve been very lucky to work with so many talented artists and musicians! I’m not sure where to begin, so I’m just going to go with what I remember at this time:

Tanner Walle was one of the last projects I did in 2011, as well as one of my favorites. Tanner, his bass player Justin Hosek and I spent a couple of weeks inspiring each other to make great art and lift Tanner’s music to its fullest potential. Here’s an example: Tanner Walle – Favor

Sarah Blacker came in to mix her EP, Perfectly Imperfect. She is always a joy to work with and mix. Perfectly Imperfect

Brad Delava brought Brian Marquis in to record his acoustic solo EP. Brad is a great engineer and, combined with Brian’s amazing talents, came out with an incredible collection of songs.

Girls Guns and Glory came in to overdub and mix their Jello/You You You single. These guys always seem to hit the mark & play with a passion!

Highway Ghosts returned to mix their new full length, Beyond All Help. The songs are a step forward for these guys; I’m proud to work with them!

6East, a Cape Cod duo produced by Rob Loyot, was mixed by yours truly. 6East is currently charting Top 30 on the AMA charts, so check ‘em out soon!

Vary Lumar released their It’s OK We’re OK EP, featuring the songs EMT Love and Facelift. This band always releases incredible material, so go download these songs. P.S.: They’re FREE!!!

That’s an overview of the second half of 2011. Next post: the first half of 2012! Until then, make great art!

Nerd alert: The next few sentences will be all about geeing out, so please skip the next paragraph if numbers make you sleepy.

A nice, new, beautifully fast Mac Pro 12-core 2.66 GHz with 36GB of RAM is fully installed with an Avid HDX card and running beautifully! All updates are made and all systems are a go! We’ve been primed for a new DAW here for a while and all of us are looking forward to sessions with this setup!

As for this past few months, I’ve been lax in posting because of everything that’s been happening both in studio and out, so a retrospective post (or two) is/are in order, either later this week or early next. In the meantime, I’m headed back to geeking out!

Mike Tarara is starting an EP next week. I look forward to working with Mike and an amazing group of musicians on this!

Last but not least, Seventh Room starting the follow up to their debut EP at the end of March. I’ve been looking forward to this for a long time! Should be a fun spring!

Well, here we are, at the end of autumn, and so much has happened (new artists, a new baseball champion, a new congress) that I hope I can remember all of it. Let’s see…

The Brightest Lights have finished their debut CD, and the reviews thus far have Bren fantastic! The official release is December 22 at church,, so if you’re in Boston come on out!

Sarah Blacker second release, entitled “Come What May” is mixed and being mastered by the incomparable Jeff Lipton and Maria Rice at Peerless Mastering on December 6th. There are a few guests on this one, as noted in previous posts, and we’re all thrilled with how the CD has come out! The CD release party is February 18 at Club Passim, so don’t miss it!

Vary Lumar is onto tracking vocals for their third release, and it’s shaping up to be their best effort yet! I can’t recommend them enough!

I mixed a project for Rob Loyot of Noise in the Attic in September. The very young (16 years old!) and talented Garrett Brown is someone for whom you all need to keep your ears open.

Bone Dry System is returning to 37′ in December. The plan is to record a 5-song, and these guys move quickly, so expect an early 2011 release!

Also returning in January are old friends . Seventh RoomThere’s a slight change in direction in store, although I prefer to think of it as a natural evolution, so this should be a fun and very cool one!

A few releases of note recently:

Tony Savarino‘s solo debut, “Guitaring” has been getting rave reviews even before its official release!, check out this one, and this one!

Totem has also been getting a boatload of praise for their self-titled return to local prominence. Check out their reviews in Hear Now Live Boston Band Crush and the RSL!

That’s all for now. Hope you all have a great Thanksgiving, and enjoy all the great new music from 37′ and everywhere!

My promise, to myself of course, was to update this blog more often than the sporadic, shall I say “frequency”, than I have in posts past. I have seen that approach fail in grandiose fashion, sadly again for my own unfulfilled self-promise. I’ll just have to learn to not trust myself and maybe I’ll learn my lesson.

In any case, here’s what’s been going on:
My dear friends Totem are back in recorded action after eight long years! This is an intense listen, so be prepared!
Suzanne McNeil has finished her CD, beautifully mixed by Duckey Carlisle, and is preparing for a fall release. Great songs, great playing, great mixes – a recipe for success!
Beginning the mixing forThe Brightest Lights‘ debut full length CD! I love this band and hope you all check them out!
Vary Lumar have started tracking their next release, this time a ten song CD. Those of you familiar with 37′ know how good this band is, and this will be their best effort thus far! They really are coming in to their own as one of the best bands in the Northeast.
Sarah Blacker has also started recording her next CD, which has started off amazingly well! Members of Session Americana came in, along with Tom Bianchi to Q Division on Tuesday and, with the engineering skills of Roni Pillischer and Sean Cahalin added to the mix, we got an incredible version of Sarah’s song “Cowboy”! More goodness to come on this one!
I was privileged to mix a song for Abbie Barrett in July, and it’s a beautiful song. Hopefully I get the honor of working with her again in the future.

That’s all for now. Be sure to find me on Facebook, Twitter and all other relevant social media. Until next time, hopefully before 2012!

Man, what a month so far! First, the 37′ Live! Hard Rock show was a success despite nature doing its best to keep people inside. Thanks to Mia Boostrom, The Dejas, Vary Lumar, Bone Dry System., The Montgomerys, along with the Hard Rock Cafe and Rawkstars, Inc. for an amazing night! Also, thanks to Heather and the incredible staff, who were tireless and went above and beyond accommodating. Our next show there is already booked for October 16th, so put it in your calendars now!

Which leads to last week’s trip to South by Southwest in Austin, TX. My first trip to SxSW has left me yearning for more! Great performances by Frightened Rabbit, the Boxer Rebellion, Minus the Bear, Girls Guns & Glory, Paper Raincoat, Quasi, Bad Veins, Billy Bragg, Mike Mills with Wayne Kramer(!), Man Man…too many great acts to mention! I’m now left wondering and exploring how to get a 37′ showcase at SxSW 2011! Any ideas people?

That’s all for now. Off to finish work with the Brightest Lights, Suzanne McNeil, Dave Foley, Rachel Zamstein, and, of course, Sarah Blacker! Talk to you all again soon!
